Hi, ~
Welcome to my newest addition to my email community,
Monthly Mini Astrology Lessons!
Last month I talked about helping kids and families with Astrology. If you want to review that lesson, you can find it and all previous ones in the archives here.
Now I am so happy to share my May 2024 MINI ASTROLOGY LESSON ~
GROWING an AMAZING GARDEN with ASTROLOGY
The Farmers’ Almanac, with its rich heritage and traditional knowledge, provides practical guidelines on how to use the moon cycles for various agricultural and gardening activities. By aligning gardening practices with the phases of the moon, growers can potentially enhance the growth, yield, and quality of their plants. Understanding the four primary moon phases—new moon, first quarter, full moon,
and last quarter—can help in planning gardening tasks effectively.
New Moon to First Quarter (Waxing Crescent)
During the waxing crescent, the moonlight increases and the gravitational pull begins to rise, creating optimal conditions for seed germination. This phase is ideal for
planting above-ground crops that produce their seeds outside the fruit, such as lettuce, spinach, broccoli, and other leafy vegetables. The increasing moonlight and gravitational pull encourage strong leaf growth and robust root systems, which are crucial for healthy and vigorous plants.
First Quarter to Full Moon (Waxing Gibbous)
As the moon transitions from the first quarter to a full moon, the light it reflects grows brighter and the gravitational pull strengthens. This period is especially good for planting above-ground crops that produce seeds inside the fruit, such as tomatoes, beans, peppers, and squashes. The intensifying moonlight not only promotes leaf and stem growth but also aids in the development of the plant’s internal structures, which
support fruit production.
Full Moon to Last Quarter (Waning Gibbous)
The waning gibbous phase marks the beginning of the moon's light decreasing, and the gravitational pull gradually lessens, which is conducive to root growth. This phase is perfect for planting root vegetables
like carrots, radishes, turnips, and onions. Additionally, it is an excellent time to transplant seedlings and bedding plants, as the diminished moonlight reduces transplant shock, while the ample gravitational pull encourages roots to establish quickly and deeply.
Last Quarter to New Moon (Waning Crescent)
In the waning crescent phase, both moonlight and gravitational pull are at their weakest, which minimizes sap flow in plants and reduces seed germination. This phase is not ideal for planting but is perfect for pruning, harvesting, and controlling pests and weeds. Pruning during this phase helps plants heal faster without excessive sap loss. Harvesting root crops now is beneficial as the reduced sap levels can enhance their flavor and storage quality. Additionally,
this is a favorable time to perform soil maintenance tasks such as weeding and mulching, which prepare the garden for the next cycle of moon phases.
Additional Tips for Using the Moon Cycles:
- Watering Practices: Adjust watering based on the moon’s phase; water less during the
waning phases to prevent root rot and more during the waxing phases to promote growth.
- Pest and Weed Control: The last quarter phase is an optimal time for integrated pest management, as many pests are less active, allowing for more effective control measures.
By following
the moon’s cycles, as outlined in the Farmers’ Almanac, gardeners can enhance their gardening practices, from planning when to plant seeds to the best times for pruning and harvesting. This time-honored method not only aligns agricultural practices with natural rhythms but also maximizes the effectiveness of these activities, promoting healthier plants and more bountiful yields. Whether it’s vegetables, fruits, or flowers, understanding and utilizing the moon phases can contribute to a more
productive and successful gardening experience.
